The History Behind the Look of La Croix

A rather unfortunate fact about our favorite company, La Croix, is that they rarely do interviews. Honestly, I get it. If I was creating a product as genius as this one I wouldn’t want to share too much information either. So, in order to know everything we can about how this sparkling water became what it is today, I did some digging… you’re welcome.

We know the general history of the company from our “Why Choose La Croix” post, which you should check out if you haven’t already, but I want to go deeper into the look and success of this company.

There’s a lot that goes into creating and branding a successful product in order to gain the amount of popularity that these flavored sparkling waters have. There has to be some sort of complex reasoning or strategy behind why their packaging looks the way it does, right? Well, kind of.

When the company first started out they were struggling to successfully advertise their product because of a limited budget… hard to believe knowing the success of the company now, right? Well, since they couldn’t afford to put out a bunch of advertisements they chose to design their packaging to have a “shelf presence” in order to attract customers. That is where the iconic bold and colorful 80’s style design was born.

La Croix Can

Surprisingly, this worked for them.

After raising their profits, they hired a professional graphic design artist to redesign the look of the look of the outdated packaging. Their competitors such as Perrier and Pellegrino used simple and sophisticated designs on their glass bottles. La Croix wanted to go for a more simplistic design but still appear approachable to their customers. From this idea, they created one glass bottle design and a more up to date design of their can.

In order to get a better idea of what their customers prefer they did a study by putting both the old and the updated packaging on shelves in stores. To the shock of every professional graphic design artist, the outdated original design won.

Although it originally took years to finally catch on, the company that brought us this amazing gift had it right from the start.

Thanks to social media influencers, celebrities, and blogs like amazing one you’re reading right now advertising the product for free, La Croix has never been so popular and let’s be honest, judging by the taste of the product it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

So go grab yourself a can of the sweet bubbly goodness and appreciate the bold designs that we, the customers, helped choose.
